The harsh realities of winter in La Pine are stark, with many individuals and families residing in prefabricated homes, RVs, tents, cars, and makeshift structures scattered throughout the vast forests. The threat of freezing temperatures looms large, exacerbating the vulnerability of those without adequate shelter. Tragically, according to the Portland-based Street Roots Organization, 17 people lost their lives while homeless in various counties, including Deschutes, during the first half of the year, with the cold undoubtedly playing a role in these fatalities.
Recognizing the urgent need to provide life-saving assistance, SVDP La Pine’s propane voucher program emerges as a beacon of hope. Supported by the Herbert A. Templeton Foundation’s generous contribution, this program provides essential propane provisions to over 1,200 families and individuals in need annually.
