COHC Funds Vital Program to Combat Food Insecurity Among Seniors and Those with Disabilities in Rural Oregon

In a significant stride towards addressing food insecurity among the most vulnerable in rural Oregon, the Central Oregon Health Council (COHC) has stepped up to fund an essential program. Designed to provide food deliveries and hot meals to seniors and individuals with disabilities in South Deschutes and North Klamath, this initiative is poised to make a meaningful impact on the lives of those in need.

Food Access for Seniors and Those with Disabilities in South Deschutes and North Klamath represents a collaborative effort to enhance self-sufficiency and reduce the number of individuals experiencing food insecurity in the region. Partnering with the La Pine Activity Center, the program will deliver hot meals and food boxes containing perishables, produce, and essential staples directly to the residences of eligible recipients.

The program’s accessibility is paramount, with multiple avenues for individuals to sign up, including online registration, paper forms, or in-person at designated locations. Support is readily provided to assist with sign-up, ensuring no one is left behind. Additionally, sign-up forms are available in both English and Spanish, catering to the diverse linguistic needs of the community.

Starting on May 14, 2024, the program will provide 50 meals and food boxes weekly, culminating in 2,600 deliveries annually. SVDP La Pine Food Bank will play a pivotal role in delivering the food boxes, supported by the La Pine Activity Center, which will prepare the hot meals. Qualifying clients can apply for delivery every 14 days.

Ultimately, this program aims to reduce food insecurity among seniors and individuals with disabilities in South Deschutes and North Klamath by providing consistent meals and food boxes to those who need them most. With the support of COHC and dedicated community partners, we are committed to making this vision a reality, one meal at a time.
